The CERN is located on the French-Swiss border and is the premier European Research Centre. A powerful driving force in scientific activity, its technical and industrial spin-offs are renowned throughout the world.

Some 6,500 scientists, half of them particle physicists of international standing, use the CERN facilities. 500 universities and over 80 nationalities are represented.

CERN at present employs more than 400 "Haut-Savoyards". peolple who live in the Haute Savoie). Since it was founded, the CERN has been responsible for many invaluable discoveries and innovations in particle physics and other branches of sciences. Many of CERN's scientists have received the Nobel Prize for their discoveries. The discovery neutral currents in 1973 and the success of ISR proton bundle collisions for the first time in the world, are a part of the CERN's history, together with one particular advance in the world of technology that everyone knowns about and can use: the World Wide Web, invented in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee.

The Conseil Général supports the construction of the LHC (Large Hydron Collider) through co-operation established for the transfer of technology for the benefit of companies in the Department.
